Technical writing

Since his early years in the industry, Martin has taken responsibility for formal reporting of the projects in which he has been involved. Fortunately, as he enjoyed a traditional education, communicating in written form has generally been a pleasure, rather than a chore. And this has been further helped by his long-term interest in print production processes and some facility with the support technology.

The process of writing is conceptually simple:

  • collect the information
  • decide what needs to be said, and how
  • structure the data
  • draft the document(s)
  • check that the material meets its objectives
  • refine the words and check spelling, grammar and layout
  • ensure that the report meets any format requirements or other standards imposed by author, user or organisation.

And of course, prune, prune, prune throughout the process!

Simple in concept, yet so few manage to achieve a good structure and fluent style. And those who do often leave traces of the composition process that make sub-editors blanch.

We can help you prepare material of which you can be proud . . .

Throughout his singing career Martin has created programmes for his choirs, most recently for the Scottish Chamber Choir, on whose web site you will find 13 years-worth of programme history. But, for something more technical, see the paper “Delivering lead-free products to the market” that he wrote for Innotec in May 2005 as one of the EPPIC-Eye series.
